The term Superfood is used to describe foods that are loaded with unique phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Scientists are constantly discovering new superfoods, but some are so exotic that few people can afford to regularly eat them. Don’t be fooled into thinking you need the latest superfood berry from a remote rainforest to be healthy. There are plenty of affordable superfoods that can be found near you.

Barley

The dietary fiber in barley is high in beta glucan, which is the same plant nutrient that gives oatmeal its ability to lower blood cholesterol.

Beans

Beans of all varieties are loaded with lean protein, dietary fiber, and phytonutrients that may help reduce the risk for heart disease.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables, which are known for containing glucosinolates that protect against cancer. Broccoli is also rich in vitamin C and folic acid.

Collard Greens
